M.S. Marriage and Family Therapy | Northwestern University (‘25)
B.A. Social Welfare with a Minor in Clinical and Counseling Psychology| UC Berkeley (‘23)
Our distinguished Class of 2019 alumna, Lauren Cho, who recently graduated from Northwestern University with a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, has a few words of wisdom to share with our Class of 2026 seniors:
“I initially began college as a Nutritional Science major, set on becoming either a dietitian or a dentist. During quarantine, I became aware of how much I enjoyed listening to people’s stories and supporting them in overcoming systemic, intergenerational, and interpersonal barriers. This insight led me to focus on sharpening my communication skills, engage with social justice work, switch majors in my final undergraduate year, pick up a minor, join research labs that aligned with my interest, and attend graduate school to become a psychotherapist (for now :)).
Researching and shadowing professionals in various fields helped me identify which roles matched the lifestyle I envisioned for myself. In addition, taking small, intentional steps to tackle personal fears each day, whether it be through public speaking, driving on the freeway, or simply booking a pottery painting solo date with my dog have been essential in building my confidence.
All this to say that one of the most valuable lessons I have learned, both in my own journey and from others, is that you never truly “figure it all out.” Instead, it is about embracing change, following your curiosity, and viewing each experience as part of the trial-and-error process that shapes you. As I grow more comfortable in my own skin, I am realizing that a successful and fulfilling life is not something waiting at the end of a finish line, but something we get to actively create, experience, and redefine every single day. Most importantly, don’t forget to celebrate small wins and progress made. Rewarding yourself for growth is not just allowed, it’s a must. We’ve got this ❤.”
