Mr. Stephen Cravak
Mr. Cravak brings thirteen years of liberal arts teaching and school leadership experience from Florida, Japan, and Taiwan. He is a New York and National Board Certified teacher, and a Florida certified leader with a bachelor of science in English Education from Boston University, and a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership.
He has years of experience with WASC Accreditation and as an Activities Director and Curriculum Coordinator, in addition to teaching English Language Arts, AP English Literature and Composition, Journalism, Creative Writing, TV Production, Leadership Skills Development, and Graphic Design courses. Co-curricular clubs are his passion as he has founded National Honor Society, Standup Comedy, and Cinema Club chapters, and also advised award winning speech and debate, World Scholar’s Cup, newspaper and student council groups.

Dr. Carlos Argueta
Computer Science Teacher
Mr. Argueta is a Honduran that has lived in Taiwan for the past 11 years. He holds both a Masters and a PhD in Computer Science from National Tsing Hua University. Overall, Mr. Argueta possesses 17 years of experience in computer programing and research.
As an educator, Mr. Argueta brings 3 years of teaching Computer Science at High School level, and several years of teaching computer labs at National Tsing Hua University as a Teacher Assistant.

Ms. Lindsey Baldwin
Ms. Baldwin is from Ohio, USA and has taught for nearly 10 years in the USA, South Korea, Honduras, Egypt, and Lebanon. She holds an Ohio professional teaching license in history and has both a BA in history and a MA in Secondary Education.
Although certified to teach history, she has taught ESL, English, and various social studies classes throughout her career at the elementary, secondary, and college levels. She has a passion for travel, salsa dance, reading, and the Spanish language.

Mr. Eric Blaisdell
Eric Blaisdell comes from Southern California. The travel bug bit him while studying English Literature in London as an undergrad. Upon returning to the States, he relocated to San Francisco where he studied animation and interned for NASA. After grad school he made his first move to Asia, teaching in Japan. While working there he met his wife Corinne (Spanish teacher). They moved to the Pacific Northwest where Eric received his Masters in Art Education at Lewis and Clark College. The following year he moved to Korea where he worked as a children's book illustrator for a publishing company. He moved to Vietnam where he began his Art teaching career at an International School. Eric's hobbies include playing guitar, hiking, and reading.

Mr. Cole was born in the US but grew up in Japan. He graduated from International Christian University (Tokyo, Japan) with a BA in Linguistics. Tom also has an M.Ed. and a M.S. in School Psychology with his credential from the state of California. In addition to studying Chinese during university, Tom also studied at NTNU for 4 years. Tom has worked with students that range in age from 3 to 92. In addition to serving as a teacher and counselor at schools in the US, Japan, Taiwan, China and Vietnam, Tom also worked as a technical translator and editor for 3 years and was a co-editor for a Japanese-English dictionary.
Tom is excited about returning to Taiwan and the challenges and opportunities ahead to contribute to the development and growth of AAIA. He is joined by his lovely wife Ivy, son Andy and daughter Emily. The last member of his family, Coco the dog, will be joining them shortly.

Ms. Deng graduated from Simon Fraser University located in B.C., Canada with a Bachelor of Art in Linguistics and a TESOL Certificate. She received her Master’s degree in Education and a Teaching Certificate in Elementary Oversea/International Education from The College of New Jersey.
Ms. Deng has sixteen years of teaching experience in private schools in both Canada and Taiwan. In her teaching years, she was awarded “The Excellent Teaching Award” in Yung-Ho city in year 2004, and Teacher of the Year” in 2015.

Mr. Ed Eibel
Admission Director/ EAL Teacher
Mr. Eibel grew up in Washington, DC and lived in Seattle before moving to Taiwan. He has taught English in America, Vietnam, and Taiwan to all age levels of students. In Vietnam, he started a language support program at The American School of Vietnam in Saigon, and has brought that experience here to AAIA. He believes students learn best through experiences, and acquire language best by learning in that language, not by memorizing vocabulary words and sentences.

Ms. Amy Fowler
ELA/EAL Support Teacher
Ms. Fowler is originally from Maryland, U.S.A. She graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies and Asian Studies. She also holds a TESOL Certificate from UMBC. This is Ms. Fowler's third year teaching in Taiwan.
Mr. Mario Fuang
Academic Director/ Math Teacher
Mr. Fuang is an American born, professionally certified Mathematics Teacher. He has been teaching in Taiwan for the past five years. He graduated from University of Maryland: College Park with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Sciences focused in Mathematics. He received his Master's degree, Secondary Oversea/International Education in Math, from The College of New Jersey. Mr. Fuang received an award Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction from The National Society of High School Scholars in 2013.
Mr. Fuang experienced a cross-cultural education that spanned two counties and teaching styles. Throughout his years of teaching, he has learned many different ways to express and explain challenging concepts. One of his biggest beliefs is that there is no “one way” fit all kind of education. A true educator can find as many ways as it takes for a student to understand.

Mr. Stuart Hayward
Mr. Hayward was born in Surrey, England. He obtained a BSc in Marine Biology from The University of Liverpool and an MSc in Conservation Biology from University College London. He has now lived and taught in Taiwan for the past three years. Prior to teaching Mr. Hayward worked in the commercial sector as an environmental analyst and consultant. He specializes in Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science. Mr. Hayward is a keen sportsman and an avid naturalist and enjoys playing soccer and hiking.

Mr. Ben Hildreth
PE Department Head
Ben Hildreth is from a small town in Washington State. He graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University with a degree in Physical Education. He then proceeded to travel the world and racked up over 82 countries. As he traveled, he has taught snowboarding, swimming and various sports. He then got his Master degree and teaching certification from the college of New Jersey and settled in Taiwan to begin his career. Ben has coached basketball, volleyball, badminton and Ultimate Frisbee while in Taiwan and has a great enthusiasm for all things active and healthy.

Mr. James Huss
James Huss is a teacher, writer, and martial artist. He holds a BA in English Literature, Writing Intensive, from University of South Carolina and an MA in English from Northwestern State University in Louisiana. James is a published novelist, an award-winning poet, and has been recognized for his research in Bolivian folklore. In addition to teaching English, he also teaches karate, aikido, and tai chi chuan. James has taught martial arts seminars and classes in the USA, China, S. Korea, the Philippines, and Bolivia. He is a world traveler and has visited 37 countries to date, but has plans to visit many more.

Mr. Ty James
ELA/ Humanities Teacher
Mr. James has been an educator for over seventeen years. He is a Texas and National Board Certified teacher, with a bachelor’s degree in communication and theatre arts, and a master’s degree concentrating in the teaching of writing, both from Eastern Michigan University. He has taught at the middle school, high school, and community college levels, and also in museum education. Ty has extensive service-learning, advisory, standards-based grading, and team-building experience. He was a Teacher of the Year in 2010, and first moved to Taiwan to teach ESL in 2015.
In 2017 Mr. James and his wife, Ms. Rich, spent 6 months thru-hiking all 3540 kilometers of the Appalachian Trail in the U.S. They plan to climb many of Taiwan’s Top 100 Peaks.

Dr. Ivy Lin
Conductor, flutist, educator, Ivy Lin pursues a versatile musical life as a passionate performer and educator. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from University of Washington, a Master of Music Degree from Boston University, and a Bachelor of Music education degree from Taipei University of Education.
As an educator, she had many years of experience teaching in international schools. Within these years, she has produced several musicals as a music director. Seeing students learn and grow is the most rewarding achievement for Dr. Lin.

Mr. Edward Liu
Mr. Liu is a native New Yorker, who after working for many years in finance, decided to become an educator. Recently, he taught math, economics and history in the New York City Department of Education, where he was responsible for implementing individualized education plans. Mr. Liu earned a B.A. from the University at Buffalo and a M.S. in education from Long Island University, Brooklyn. He is a certified middle/high school teacher and is qualified to work with students with disabilities. In addition, Mr. Liu is a certified public accountant (inactive). In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, hiking, bicycling and watching his favorite team, the New York Yankees.

Mr. Ryan Massey
Math /Science Teacher
Mr. Ryan Massey was born in Ontario, Canada. He obtained a BSc in Earth Science, followed by a BSc in Theoretical Physics, and a Masters of Physics where he studied General Relativity, focusing on black holes. After this he decided to become a teacher and received his BEd from the University of Toronto.
He then travelled overseas to England where he taught physics for three years. He decided to continue travelling and moved to Taiwan where he has taught math and physics for three years, finally ending up at AAIA. During this time he obtained his certification to teach physics at the IB level. He enjoys watching movies, playing board games, as well as playing ultimate Frisbee.

Mr. Tom Mauborgne
Mr. Tom Mauborgne was born in Vienne, France, and holds a British Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with French specialism. He has more than 10 years of experience in teaching that spans France, the UK, Poland, Greece and Taiwan. Tom is about to complete a Master’s Degree in Education and has been both a Master Teacher and PLC leader.
With a penchant for cooking, a flair for football and a love of the limelight, he has shared these varied talents with students in record-attendance French cooking courses, soccer club coaching and TISSA tournaments, and Scholars’ Cup participation and judging. In his spare time, he likes to run up and down the mountains of northern Taiwan, when he’s not changing nappies for his son.

Ms. Christina Phenix
Ms. Phenix is from beautiful Boulder Colorado. She received her Bachelors in Studio Art through the university of Colorado Boulder. She taught writing and photography in the United States before moving to Taiwan. She has been living and teaching in Taiwan for 3 years in both Art and English language studies. She is currently working on her teaching certificate through the District of Columbia. She is currently enrolled in a Master's of Education program through the University of Nebraska. Ms. Phenix loves to travel and can easily get distracted talking about places she wants to visit.

Mr. Pohlman hails from New York State. He received his B.A. in Mathematics Education from the State University of New York: Cortland. He also holds an M.S.Ed. in Mathematics from SUNY Cortland. He has been teaching in Taiwan for eight years.

Ms. Andrea Rich
Biology / EAL Teacher
Ms. Rich hails from North Carolina, U.S.A. She has a B.S. in general biology with a minor in anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She has taught ESL in Taiwan for 1 ½ years. Before that, she taught ballroom dance and also worked in Texas schools in a supporting role. Andrea brings a combined 3 ½ years of experience teaching and working in education. She believes education is the most valuable thing a person can have.
Andrea’s interest in science comes from her affinity for the wilderness. She grew up in the Smoky Mountains and thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in the United States (with Mr. Ty James, her husband). She continues to take every opportunity to climb mountains.

Mr. Tony Rubino
Associate Academic Director/ Humanities Teacher
Mr. Rubino is a Canadian born professional Educator that has been practicing in Asia for the past Eight years. He holds two professional teaching certifications. His first is from the Province of Ontario Canada and the second is from New York State, USA. He has earned a Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Queen's in Ontario as well as a Master of Science Degree Specialized in Adolescent Education from Amherst College in New York State. He also holds a Specialized Honors Bachelors of Arts Degree in Geography from Laurentian University in Ontario Canada. Mr. Rubino grew up in the province of Ontario Canada but has also lived in the USA, South Korea, Italy and Taiwan.

Ms. Bronwen Shelwell
Bronwen Shelwell is from South Africa and has lived abroad for over ten years. She received her BA and Masters equivalent PGC in Arts Education from the University of South Africa. Majoring in glass she has since exhibited in South Africa, Canada, Namibia, Hong Kong, and China. In Johannesburg, she also managed an art gallery and curated a nonprofit platform for emerging artists to show their work. Since living in Asia she has also published on the development of the arts on the continent.
Her teaching philosophy is based on learning how to be independently creative within an openly collaborative learning environment. Arts education focuses on skills development, problem-solving, and concept generation and is one of the most exciting and holistic subjects to learn!

Mr. Daniel Staples
Math/ Science Teacher
Mr. Staples is from the province of Ontario in Canada. He will be teaching Physical Science, Biology, Engineering Design and AP Chemistry in the coming academic year. He completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Waterloo in Canada and completed a Master of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Sydney in Australia. He was trained as a teacher at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. He has worked in Canada, South Korea, Singapore, Mainland China and obviously Taiwan. Besides English, he can also speak some Chinese, French and Korean. In his free time he enjoys working out with weights and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Ms. Corinne Thomsen
Spanish/ Humanities Teacher
Ms. Thomsen holds a M.Ed in TESOL from Concordia University in Oregon, a B.A. in Latin American Studies and Spanish from Oberlin College in Ohio, and has over 15 years of teaching experience. She has taught elementary school through high school, university and graduate level students in a variety of subjects, including History, Economics, Language Arts, Linguistics and English as a Foreign Language. She has also worked as a Teacher Trainer, specializing in EFL teaching Methodology/Approach and Intercultural Communication. Originally from California, Ms. Thomsen has lived and taught in the US, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Italy, Ecuador, and is now excited to call Taiwan her new home.

Mr. James Wax
ELA/ Art Teacher
Mr. Wax has taught English, Speech and Theater for 13 years. As a playwright, his work has been produced by several professional theater companies in America.
Mr. Wax first appeared on stage in 1st grade in an extremely awkward portrayal of General George Washington in a school play. Despite his initial stage fright, forgotten lines and nervous performance, he has been in love with the theater ever since. After graduating college, Mr. Wax has worked as a professional actor for various companies in the U.S.
Being onstage in high school taught Mr. Wax a valuable lesson: If you can be confident onstage, you can be confident anywhere.

Mr. Ryan Witte
RTI Coordinator/ Humanities Department Head/ Humanities Teacher
Mr. Witte is a certified educator from Denver, Colorado. He obtained two Bachelor's degrees from the University of Texas at Austin: one in Chinese language and the other in Government. He completed his Master of Education program at Regis University in Denver in 2012 and holds his professional Social Studies teaching license from the State of Colorado. Mr. Witte first came to Taiwan to study Chinese in 2005 and has lived in Taiwan off and on for a total of eight years. This is his fifth year teaching at an international school in Taiwan and his fifth year as a Director of Model United Nations.
